  • Canoe Trip - Chapter One

    Tuesday

Los Conquistadores were finally to set out on the River. It was early noon when they took off from the gravel peppered beach. The group thought they were finally ready to embark on their very own adventure. As they were doing last minute preperations an old weathered fisherman approached the team. He warned of the River's last horrofic act not too long ago. He told them how the River unmercifully took the life of another man. This news brought no fear to them, and if it did they knew how not to show it. They would conquer the River, no matter the consequences. The team were now boarding their canoes. The formation would be Davy (Brother to Joel) in the front and Dave (The Unfearing and wisest beast) covering sweep. This would be the formation they would be using that day. Since it had been months since they had last canoed, the entire team managed to at least flip once. Even Cleto, who claimed that he was unsinkable, managed to flip. Except Joel who had been on more river trips then the rest of Los Conquistadores. Annoyed by this Cleto flipped another boat. This did not affect the team however, it would take have taken more to affect them. Despite a few rolls, flips, and dips they still managed to move down the River quickly. At the end of the day the four boat squadron (two in each in canoe) manuvered through the decieving waters with pricise turns and strokes. A series of rapids, delays, and snack breaks later the team finnally had reached their destination, The Island.

The Island's bank was a steep descent to get to the campsite. It took a short while but Los Conquistadores managed to get their gear on the site. They moved quickly and efficiently to get their specalized camping equipment set up. Like an assembly line they were able to set up their equipment. They didn't even wasted time to get a fire started. They even knocked down a section of a tree that had died. Fortunately no men were injured when that tree came down. Like coackroaches in light they they split before the oversize flyswatter could claim any of their lives. After hacking, sawing, and splitting away at wood, they had enough lumber to support their stay at the island. The team had a lot of time to do whatever since they had moved very effeciently. Half of the team took short power naps to recover some strength. The other half played by the river bank. Anxious to conquer the Island, Dave got together a small scouting squad. The little special opts team to venture into the untamed side of the Island. The tame side of the Island was covered by small trails left by other groups. The unventured side of the Island was heavily vegetated by trees, thorn bushes, and other unidentified species of plants. Dave would lead them to the heart of the Island. They ventured out into the thickly wooded area. They whacked aside thorn bushes with weapons formed from fallen tree branches. As they continued to wander deaper toward the center of the Island they came across a field of plants that came up to some of their hieghts. As they were crashing through these plants an enticing aroma caught their attention. A thick smell of pine led to the center of the Island. There at the middlle of the Island was a pine tree which stood out from the rest of the plants in the field they were in. They stayed a moment under the umbrella shaped tree. After circling the field the opts team reached the other side of the island. They soaked in the pride of being able to cross the Island for a while. The looked at the sights that the other side of the Island had to show. They even saw a few creatures. Soon they realized the the sun was setting quickly on the land. They would have to move quickly to get back to their camp. As they were tracking their way back they came across the Valley of Ferns. They made a quick judgement decision and decided to cross the valley quickly. They crossed it in no time and discovered that they had come to the edge of the Island. The sun was still descending as they looked around at the edge of the Island. They crossed over the ferns once again and decided to head back to their campsite on the side of the Island were there camp was. They began to cross another field of ferns when they came to a wall of vines and other plants. It would take to long to back around to their path that they had created and the sky wasn't getting any brighter. Dave gave once glance to his team and then his stick. He gazed at the wall and then lunged at it with a loud shout swinging his weapon furiously away at the wall. He would go through the wall. He continued hacking away at the wall until there was clearly a path through the wall. The team charged through the wall and into a field of tall plants. They brushed there way through the field. As they approached the field they came unto a fallen tree and realized this naturally made bridge was the only way through a field of ferocious thorn vines and bushes. They crossed on top of the old gnarled tree which kept getting narrower and narrower as they went along. Finally they crossed and looked at what they had to cross yet before they reached their campsite. They decided they would run across a path that would lead to the woods which surrounded their site. The sky was getting darker and they had no lighting equipment. It was already getting hard to see as the trees casted their shadows upon the Island with their arms trying to block out the sun. They ran on the path trying to avoid poising from the deadly ivy plants, tripping over decieving places on the path, and trying to escape ensnarement from the fierce thorn vines which clawed at them. They could see in the distance between the trees there fire, only a few steps closer...

  • "What's Next?"

I'd like to make a toast to unemployment.

These past few weeks have getting to me with events that has happened recently. My friends are out of school now that means we get to hang out more often now. (Joel +Friends= Less opportunities to be bored.) This past sunday I went with some friends to a free Avalon concert at the Brooklyn Tabernacle. It was very cool. I haven't really heard much about them before I went to the concert, but hey it was free, why not. I have - I hope - a job opportunity which requires me to brush up on my spanish. (Now that I think about it sounds funny I'm Spanish and I have to work on my... nevemind) Anyways I hope this doesn't turn out to be another letdown. This offer had been standing for a while, while I was getting rejected at other job offers that I wanted.

The more I think about the more I think I believe it. God has an interesting sense of humor. I say I'm gonna do this and He's probably like,"Yea right you are." and then bam. I slam into the door of opportunity which I thought was open. (Let's here it for irony) I guess I'll have to be patient and see what's next.

    I'm a Minority

This past weekend I went to an interview at the deli section at a local supermarket. I had spoken to the store manager first on friday and he gave me a shot to see, "What I got." The next day I got there I wasn't in the store for more than seven minutes. The Deli guy said that he could train me in the products and whatever else but when it came to the slicer machine thingymajingy he said that was something that he couldn't train me in. He went on to tell me about some guy who was cutting out a big order and sliced his finger tip off. Then he told me sorry that he couldn't hire me because I'm too young and if something were to happen to me he felt it would be on him. Then he made a X with his arms, like me not getting rejected again wasn't enough. It seems so stupid the past job opportunities that I thought I had. It makes no sense but I'm to young and inexperienced to recieve the training to gain the experience. I'm a minority. LOL

  • Recap

It seems like a while since I've last been on xanga. I've been (it seems) running around not really sitting still. (it takes too much effort) My recent adventures? B.O.B. orientation trip in PA. (Beyond Our Borders) I was there from Wed. till yesterday. They had very good sessions and workshops at Camp Andrews. Then on Friday we went to the Sesquehana River. I can't say which branch we went down, or even tell you how to spell the name of that river. I can say however that it was a very good time canoeing down the river. It was just a blessing being able to experience nature in full like we did. For those of you who are wandering if the river was cold this time of the year, I'll tell you honestly. It was very cold. That fact wasn't going to stop several of us to go swimming. It really woke us up.

Now I'm home again and doubt that I'll be going anywhere for a while. This I believe is the end of my traveling adventures. I was hoping to find out this week if I would start working by this week unfortunately there isn't much work going on at my old job. So pretty much I'll have another week of bumming around. *sigh*
